Antarctic Penguins: A Study of Their Social Habits is a scientific book that currently only attracts scholars. Panther Publishing wants to expand the target audience to also include students conducting research projects and individuals who like to travel to exotic places. The re-design is completely open stylistically, though there must be two conceptually different options.
The first solution is an illustrative approach. The image on the front cover is the letter A because when I think of Antarctica, I think of penguins. Since I also think of icebergs, the decorative A also represents a carved iceberg. Since the A is slanted upwards, the text is juxtaposed on the same diagonal. On this version, blue is used as the accent color to remind the viewer of the cold continent. Instead of translating the background color to the back as well, a photograph is used for more visual impact and interest.
The second solution includes relevant photography, unlike previous versions of the book cover. The orange of the penguin’s bill is translated through select typography on the front cover and inside flaps and through the background boxes on the spine and back cover. A light gray was eye-dropped from the image itself to provide a background for the flaps so it’s not as stark white. A macro photograph of feathers is used on the back cover as a subtle reminder that the book is about penguin species.
The book guts uses a serif typeface, Calluna. Instead of paragraph indents, there are paragraph returns to separate the information. At the start of each chapter, there is a penguin glyph taken from one of the book covers. Journal excerpts are in italics and figure numbers are bolded to create a little visual contrast. See below for sample pages or click here to view the entire designed book guts (150 pages total).
Sketches
I originally sketched four concepts and rendered an additional four concepts on the computer with the use of my original photography.
